A Meal to Remember raises more than $613k!

On Friday, November 6 Meals On Wheels Atlanta hosted our 28th Annual A Meal to Remember Gala at the St. Regis Atlanta. Chaired by Louise Sams, Marsha Middleton, and Michelle Crosland, the event raised $613,371 for seniors in need. Guests enjoyed a delicious meal prepared by Fabien Lefebvre, Laurent Carratié, Pierre Augé, Joe Trevino, and Jerome Grilhot. Attendees were able to participate in a live and silent auction including luxurious jewelry, handbags, art, and exciting trips. Cox Enterprises was honored for their years of dedication and support of MOWA's mission. A big thank you to all of our sponsors and patrons who made this memorable night possible!

Volunteer of the Month: Barbara Haig

With few exceptions, Barbara Haig has delivered the Bankhead route every Saturday for the past 7 years. A lifelong resident of Atlanta, she is one of the most devout and dependable volunteers we have. Oh, and did we mention she’s 89 years old?

That’s right, at 89 years old she is older than most of the clients to whom she delivers. She is always seeking out new volunteer opportunities, and after reading about Meals On Wheels Atlanta in her newspaper she decided to give us a try. Seven years later, she’s still delivering.  She also volunteers with her church, Second Ponce de Leon Baptist, Habitat for Humanity and the annual Flower Show. When asked if she has learned anything from all of her volunteer work she replied, “That there are lots of people out there who need help,” and it is obvious she is ready to help them.

In her spare time, Barbara enjoys water skiing, gardening and going to Braves games. What’s her advice to younger generations? “Stay active-mentally and physically.”

Sewing for a Cause

We are so proud of our Auburn and Bethlehem Senior Centers Sewing Team for their “Sewing for a Cause” initiative. Over the past two months they have made clothes for over 100 homeless children enrolled in the Our House program at the Genesis Shelter. This project began as part of the Vocational Wellness aspect of our Seven Dimensions of Wellness initiative for our seniors, and now they will have the opportunity to present their gift to the Volunteer Director of Our House on November 10.
