Thanks to all of the volunteers who donated and wrapped gifts for our seniors this holiday season. All of the gifts were delivered on Christmas Eve with our meals. These gifts are often the only gifts our seniors receive. This year, we had a record 828 gifts, and every client we serve received one.

Travis Turner decided to start volunteering for MOWA three years ago, when a friend happened to mention it at A Meal to Remember. Already an avid supporter for almost a decade, he wanted to go even further and actually deliver the meals himself. He was surprised to find just how much work goes into planning, packing and delivering the meals each week, but impressed by the amount of dedication he saw from the employees and other volunteers. Since then he has formed a bond with the clients on his routes, and looks forward to their smiles and friendly greetings every time he delivers. He feels responsible for them, and worries about the 300+ seniors still on the waiting list.

However, he believes that with teamwork and the right leadership Atlanta will be able to provide support to all seniors in need. In fact, when asked to describe himself in one word, Travis chose optimistic.

While he enjoys reading, golfing, and good steak, he thinks that volunteering is one of the best ways that retirees can spend their time. When asked what he would say to encourage others to volunteer, he replied,

“Even if you have been successful and feel good about your life, you’ll feel so much better if you help others.”

Fox5 recently did a heartwarming story on our Pet Food Program featuring client Antoinette Williams. Through a partnership with the Atlanta Humane Society, we deliver cat and dog food to our senior clients who need it for their furry companions. Click the picture to view the whole story.

This holiday season, Meals On   Wheels Atlanta participated in an exciting  project with greencents™, a local company  focused on educating consumers on making energy efficient choices. By hosting a month-long crowdfunding campaign, they raised $2,585 to support the donation of 26 energy efficiency lighting kits to low-income seniors served by our home repair program. In total, that is 208 LED light bulbs that will help our seniors save on energy costs. The greencents™ Energy Efficiency Campaign with Meals On Wheels Atlanta brought energy efficiency to low-income families and seniors that could not otherwise afford it. Just one energy efficiency kit can save a family over $800 in its lifetime and they can now spend the money saved on other important necessities. Thank you greencents™!
