 14th Annual MOWA Golf Tournament

MEALS ON WHEELS ATLANTA will hold its 14th annual golf tournament on Monday, September 8, at the Capital City Club Brookhaven.  Nearly 100 players will hit the links to raise much-needed funds to provide nutritious meals to home-bound Atlanta seniors. This year’s presenting sponsors are VITAS and Hodges-Mace Benefits Group and the event chairs are Peter Mace of Hodges-Mace Benefits Group, Ransom James of Eagle Merchant Partners, and Brooks Fischer of Yates Insurance.

“The annual Meals On Wheels Atlanta Golf Tournament is a great way to have a lot of fun and provide some necessary support for the most needy seniors in our community,” stated chair Peter Mace.  “The waitlist for meals is currently over 200 people and more dollars is a simple solution to ending the problem of senior hunger.”

There are still sponsorship opportunities available and a few foursomes left to purchase!  Please check our website for details: http://mealsonwheelsatlanta.org or contact Jessica Perno, Director of Special Events at 404.605.8450 or jperno@mealsonwheelsatlanta.org with any questions!

Kaiser Permanente of Georgia Awards $50,000 to
Meals On Wheels Atlanta

Funding will provide more than 3,000 meals and care management for frailest seniors

Kaiser Permanente of Georgia has awarded a grant of $50,000 to Meals On Wheels Atlanta for the Extra Helping and Care Management Initiative. The Initiative funding will provide more than 3,000 meals, and enable social worker home visits and nutrition supplements for the frailest seniors.

“Georgia is in a senior hunger crisis,” said MOWA Executive Director Jeff Smythe. “Kaiser Permanente will help us feed and support those who are at greatest risk.”

As the ninth worst state for senior hunger, one in every six older Georgians is at risk of hunger or malnutrition. According to the Atlanta Regional Commission, MOWA’s Fulton County service area has the highest percentage of seniors living in poverty (12%), living alone (nearly 50%), and having difficulty leaving the house (25%), when compared with the rest of the metro area.

A high percentage of senior meal recipients have chronic illnesses such as arthritis, hypertension, vision problems, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, or breathing problems. The specialized care provided by the Kaiser Permanente Extra Helping and Care Management Initiative will help combat these illnesses and the devastating effects than can have on seniors’ lives.

“Helping people achieve total health is at the core of our mission, and a healthy diet is essential to maintaining overall health,” said Madelyn R. Adams, director of community benefit at Kaiser Permanente of Georgia. “We support MOWA’s efforts to ensure that seniors—one of the state’s most vulnerable populations—receive well-balanced meals each day.”

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome, Amber Hunt, our new Home Delivered Meals Director.  Amber is originally from LaGrange, GA but has called Atlanta home ever since graduating from Tuskeegee University with a degree in Food and Nutritional Science with a concentration in Dietetics.  Her background is in clinical nutrition, community nutrition and food service.  When not working at Meals On Wheels Atlanta she loves cooking and shopping!

COX Interns at MOWA

Thanks so much to the Cox Intern team for giving of their time to come and volunteer with MOWA!  We truly enjoyed hosting them and appreciated their service project in the kitchen.  Packing boxes and bagging bread may seem like minuscule tasks, but the work of those extra hands saved us a lot of labor hours.  Thanks a million for your service and dedication to fulfilling our mission!  Volunteers like the Cox Intern team really help us to accomplish our mission of supporting senior independence through, meals, shelter, education and community!
